It was inconceivable that they would ever be able to live openly, free from stigma and discrimination. LGBTQ people were among those “outsiders.” Fifty years ago, it was unthinkable for them to walk hand in hand, marry, or adopt a child. Americans who felt like outsiders in their places of birth also flocked to New York, where our diversity has allowed them-not without struggle-to find communities in which they could feel welcome. Long before Lady Liberty graced New York Harbor, our City welcomed immigrants from all over the world seeking freedom, escape from persecution, and a better life.
